There are three levels of hints for conservation:

  1. Simple changes which create immediate savings.
  2. Improvements which may cost some dollars up front, leading to savings in the long term.
  3. Lifestyle changes which must be continued to create savings.

A combination of all three can lead to significant savings.

Simple change: unplugging an appliance which is no longer being used but using electricity even when 'off'.
(5 watts: $7.88 per year each appliance)
That may not sound like much, but 20 appliances are adding $26.26 to each hydro bill!

Improvement: installing compact fluorescent bulbs in appropriate locations.
(60 watt bulb @ 8 hours/day: save $24.16 per year each bulb)
That may not sound like much, but converting 10 bulbs will remove $40.27 from each hydro bill! That's $241.62 per year. Or enough to buy 64 more CF bulbs!*
*(Based on price of $9.99 for a package of 3)

Lifestyle change: using a clothesline for six months per year and the electric dryer for six months.
(3 loads/week: save $105.23 per year)
(7 loads/week: save $245.54 per year)

"What is a reasonable and attainable target for my base consumption?"
Obviously each household has a base consumption which is dependent on many factors, many of which are lifestyle choices. A good target is
7 kWh /day or 213 kWh /month. This does not include seasonal heating or air conditioning costs, or hot water if you have an electric hot water heater.

Consumption of 7 kWh /day at today's rates is a bi-monthly bill of $97.28 or $583.68 per year.

We can provide you with the information you need to help you meet your target base consumption.
